We were very excited to get some cheap fares from KL to Mauritius and although it has a 5 hour time difference to Australia, which would make it difficult for working remotely, we decided it was too good an opportunity so jumped at the chance and booked some tickets.

We arrived after a long flight from Penang via KL.

We were picked up at the airport and taken to an apartment we booked on Air B&B. The hosts were lovely welcoming people keen to show us around but unfortunately the internet was not working and it is vital for Bruce’s work. After everyone trying to be helpful and extra people being called in we still didn’t have it working. So we spent the next day going around computer shops to find a solution…but that’s another story. Finally after getting a dongle all was good to go on the work front and we could relax and enjoy Mauritius for a couple of days before Bruce had to start work.

Not sure which is best the sky or the sea!

When Bruce took photos of these musician having a session on the beach they took our camera and took a few of us! Actually got a couple of nice ones!

Time to relax!

We spent the first day enjoying our local beach at Flic en Flac which is on the West side of the island. A beautiful long beach where you can walk for miles and enjoy a lovely swim in the turquoise water. It is so crystal clear that you can see little fish dart past your feet when in the shallows. I’m determined to try and paint the reflected sun and patterns on clear water…a challenge!

We organised a driver for the day to explore the North West coast and to show us around some places we were keen to see. We went to the capital Port Louis and visited the Le Caudan waterfront which is a big marina port with some very fancy buildings and high end shopping and then across the street to the local market and small street shops.

It was Sunday afternoon so a lot of places were closing up but still full of locals touting their wares. I have to say although everyone is friendly you have to keep your wits about you and we were told to keep an eye on our bags!

Oh and on the way we stopped at an amazing church/cathedral which was made by African slaves and each brick was hand carved out of blocks of stone!

From Port Louis we drove up the coast to lots of beautiful beach areas; Point aux Piment, Trou aux Biches, Mon Choisy, Grand Baie (where we stopped at La Croisette Mall for a quick lunch) and Pereybere a very popular beach and difficult to find a carpark.

We continued onto the very northern point of Cape Malheureux which is so called as it is affected by every cyclone that visits the area!

There is very picturesque Church of Notre Dame at the the cape which we were keen to see.

On the return trip we stopped at Mon Choisy beach for a lovely swim. It was just lovely to see the locals swimming having picnics and I especially liked the older ladies playing music and dancing. Much less self conscience that at home!

These ladies were having lots of fun and certainly had rhythm!

We then returned to Flic en Flac via Port Louis again to see the sunset from the top of the citadel which gives a great view over the city.

Some local ladies in their lovely colourful clothing.

Although it was a Sunday and some things were closed it was actually nice to see what the locals do on the weekend and gives a good picture of Mauritius life rather than just visiting tourist spots.

It was a lovely day and we were grateful to Christopher, the lovely driver for showing us around some of the less touristy places. Enjoyed a lovely sunset from the car ride home.
