We just spent a wonderful day on a Catamaran cruise which left from Blue Bay on the South East coast of Mauritius and went to Ile aux Cerfs further up the coast. We stopped for some snorkeling and to see a waterfall on the way.

Meeting point on the other side of the island.

This fisherman come sales man came for a chat and sold me a couple of necklaces apparently made from sea urchin. Had to get our moneys worth and asked for a photo!

Ile aux Cerfs (deer island) is in the largest lagoon of Mauritius and comprises of about 87 hectares of bushland and white sandy beaches. A very popular tourist and local attraction where people usually get a boat from the village of Trou dÉau Douce not far away and spend the day on the island.

After a snorkel and refreshing swim. Look at the colour of that water!

We chose to take the boat from Blue Bay so we could get more time cruising on the boat and enjoying the journey.

We wouldn’t mind one of these!

We spent about one hour on the Island which was just beautiful but you don’t really need much more time unless you want to eat at the restaurant.

Across a little channel to a long white sandy beach.

Lovely casuarina trees which seem to be found along all beach fronts in Mauritius. I think we could do with a few more in Darwin. They are tough and provide great shade.

It doesn’t look like there were many people but there were plenty of tourists.

Getting across the little causeway to the next beach area..keeping the camera dry and looking a bit feral!

The island has all the tourist water-sports such as parasailing, banana boats that seem to be an essential part of any beach in our travels. The sails land on a floating pontoon rather than a beach which is different!

The scenery of mountain ranges against the water is spectacular. We really enjoyed the day and took a few hundred more photos!

The water was very calm as it’s actually in a giant lagoon. We went past fish farms and a few little islands. Bruce also went snorkeling  and saw a few fish but nothing spectacular. I enjoyed a refreshing swim and although I didn’t have a prescription mask the water was so clear you could see fairly well.

After mooring in the mouth of a river we all transferred into a small boat to go and view the waterfall. We had to check out the way the motors were connected and we had never heard of a Makara…good thing there’s a Honda as well!

This guy, like many Mauritians could speak multiple languages!

mauritius-5804

Boats were lining up to take their turns to go right up next to the falls.

We had a lovely barbecued lunch cooked on board (with the help of Bruce…he’s only pretending!) with a choice of drinks. Enjoyed grilled fish, chicken, a cold beer and a glass of local white wine.

mauritius-07738

A wonderful charcoal barbecue, a great way to cook on the boat.

The happy crew kept everyone entertained and well looked after.

Having a laugh with the captain.

The crew on board were very entertaining with lots of joking and a singalong in numerous languages on the way home.

A few beers, wines and rums were consumed by many of the passengers so some got into a bit of local dancing. We stuck to the singing! It was fun to see the bantering of crew members between the different cruise companies! Pretending each other needed life rings and that they were rowing canoes etc.

A lovely day on the water, perfect weather and a peaceful drive back across the island to our place in Flic en Flac.
